I work about 25 hours a week. Often less. I’m not a
tekkie – in fact I’m quite “technologically challenged” and yet all my income
is created online. My bills are paid. I have no credit card debt.
In fact, I put a considerable percentage of income into savings. Without
fail. We own a lovely home and drive newer cars. I go to the gym
four days a week. My husband and I walk together after dinner in a charming
park close to home to relax and connect at the end of the day.
I work from my laptop pretty much anywhere. Often it’s a local
coffee shop or bookstore – where I run into friends every day. I can work from
anywhere I have access to the Internet and my cell phone.
Every month we drive four hours to another state for the
weekend to see the kids and the three most adorable grandkids in the world.
Angelica is almost four, Wyatt just turned three and Reese is seven months
old. We spoil them with affection and special gifts when we see
something we can’t resist.
Next month we’re visiting an exotic resort in Mexico for a
week. I’ve been to Europe several times, Caribbean cruises, Hawaii,
Greece and Turkey – all in the last few years. I’m 49 and my husband is
61.
My husband is semi-retired and works 25 hours a week for a
local non-profit organization. He gets a pension of less than $300 a month
from an aerospace corporation where he worked for many years.
Translation: not much money but plenty of personal satisfaction.
Our lifestyle isn’t based on his income. With my Internet income we’re
exceedingly comfortable, relaxed, stress-free and confident about our
retirement in the coming years.
But it wasn’t always so.
How a Former
Marketing and Selling Failure Discovered the Secrets to Online Selling
Success
There was a time when I struggled financially. Big time.
Not just because my business was new – but because I was lousy at marketing
and selling online. I avoided “getting out there.” I didn’t want to
sound pushy or manipulative. I wanted online customers to be attracted
to me and what I offered.
I had a degree in Marketing and couldn’t sell worth beans. Hey,
they don’t teach you how to sell a doggone thing in Marketing school – but I
learned to track statistics and what positioning and branding were! Almost
useless!!
Everything I learned back in college told me I was supposed to
do it one way – but it didn’t work. I wrote website copy and the
response would be thundering silence. I was in tears many times trying
to figure out what I was doing wrong.
Or, people would email me saying, “That’s the best site I’ve
ever read.” I was a good writer of articles, short stories or reports. But
very few bought. I was discouraged, demoralized and disappointed.
Would I ever create online income?
I gradually cracked the code on marketing and selling in
person. I learned what gets customers to buy often has little to do with
your product or services. It even has little to do with benefits.
(That information is in Lesson One of my e-book.) I wanted effortless online
sales. I wanted to wake up, check my online account and see happy
surprises. Sales. It wasn’t happening. I felt horrible,
embarrassed and like a big, fat failure.
Who Else Wants the Secrets Those “Gurus” Use to Rake in the Dollars Online?
One day I discovered a secret. Something I’d been told at
one of those three day seminars where you spend thousands of dollars to have a
crotchety “guru” tell you how to do it. I was working for a
mega-bestselling author and “millionaire maker” so I got lots of invites to go
to these expensive seminars free. And, I attended my share. But it all
seemed pushy, abrasive, manipulative and harsh. Not me at all. You
neither?
I wanted happy customers who’d come back and buy from me again
and again – not resentful, ticked-off ones. After all, I believed in
what I offered. I shouldn’t have to act like a pushy salesman, should I?
I made shifts by appealing to prospective customers in a more
personal way. I could see a glimmer of hope. Sales started trickling
in. Then I thought about what I learned about marketing in college.
Most of what I learned was pretty useless. It was designed to help market
big mega-companies not home-based businesses. I took what worked and
threw away the rest. Most “marketing” used by huge corporations won’t
work for home-based businesses. I wrote down what worked and what
didn’t. I didn’t realize it yet – but I was developing a system.
I kept discovering online tactics and tips to create happy
customers. At first, I resisted because everything I learned in college
was different. But every time I used those “tried and true advertising
strategies” – it was like a black hole into which I flushed away more money
and time. Frustrating.
Most people do what they think is supposed to work from the
advertising “experts.” They combine mis-information with online
traffic-generating ideas to bring in visitors. The result is a mess that
creates traffic but doesn’t turn traffic into loyal customers. They get
very little bang for their marketing buck. Are you making the same
mistakes? We’ve all been there. But you don’t have to keep doing
it.
Would
You Believe Me if I Told You Most Advertising Isn’t Designed to Sell?
You’d be shocked and think I’m off my rocker. But y’know
what? Most ads aren’t designed to sell. They’re meant to create
something known in the ad industry as “brand awareness.” Brand awareness
and selling are two different things. For most online direct marketers –
brand awareness isn’t so important at all.
In the high-flying ad agency business Creative Directors say,
“We know 50 percent of advertising works. Problem is – we don’t know
which 50 percent.” That’s a scary thought when you’re a home-based
business owner bootstrapping and trying to squeeze out maximum value on a
shoestring budget.
I gradually came to believe those advertising “whiz kids” and
“experts” didn’t know beans about selling. Everything I thought was
wrong worked.
Stick to the amazing fundamentals I share with you – and sales
will come gushing in. Stray away from them – and nothing works. Trends
and fads change – but “buying behavior” doesn’t change much.
I fine-tuned what I learned and created a system that works for
any online business owner. If you can write a halfway decent sentence – you
can do this. Even if you don’t think you’re a good writer.
Next, I road-tested it. I let newbie, online
business owners create their own emotionally compelling online copy using my
system. I asked them to report back to me on their results. No, they
didn’t become millionaires in 90 days or some such nonsense. You’re
smarter than that. Testers who followed what I told them generated more
online sales and leads than ever before. Lots more. Now, I’m so
excited about my system for transforming visitors into customers I have to
share it with you.
As I was learning from the “experts” at lightning speed, I
gradually evolved from a part-time virtual assistant to a marketing trainer

Here’s an interesting fact: 75 percent of people are
“skimmers.” 20 percent of people read every word. The remaining 5

time. The least expensive direct marketing writer I know charges $7,500
for one sales letter.
My suggestion: find technical experts, who are far less
expensive to help you upload pages, tweak your design or optimize your site to
increase qualified traffic. Develop the skills to write emotionally
compelling copy yourself. Again, if you can write a half-decent sentence
you can do it.
Most sales letters online are pretty cheesy. In my e-book

Expensive
Lessons or Discovering Unmet Needs?
Several years ago I attended an Internet Marketing conference
that set me back a couple thousand dollars. I purchased a bundle of
information from one of the top sales letter writing gurus – another $1,500.
This guy fancies himself a tough guy, maverick type. I read through the
two rather theoretical, unfocused manuals – several times – and listened
intently to the two CDs included with the over-priced package. They were
entertaining but not very helpful.
He put on a great “performance” at the conference but he didn’t
provide nearly as much useful information as you’ll discover in my
